Anticipation of end of speech turn for interruption detection

The Gender Equality Monitor project, coordinated by INA, aims to develop automatic methods to analyze the representation of women and men in the media. In this context, we are interested in the analysis of interruptions in TV and radio programs to understand the dynamics of interactions and power relationships between speakers.

In order to allow smooth transitions during conversations, humans anticipate when to speak. We define an interruption as a turn of speech starting at a time when the previous turn could not be expected to end.

We will present a perceptual study showing the human ability to anticipate the end of a speaking turn several words in advance, and then the current state of our work on automatic prediction of the time remaining before a turn end.
